Calling all photo enthusiasts! What if I told you there was a phone in the market that will challenge you to drop your DSLR camera (not literally!) and instead use your smartphone to capture all your new photographs?
Telus put the new Lumia 1020 in my hands and being cam-crazy, you can bet I enjoyed this review! I’m not at all nearly close to being a professional photographer (I don’t even know what ISO means) but this is why this phone is so great.
The Lumia 1020 is a niche device for those that enjoy photography on a more professional level than the average user. The Lumia 1020’s camera quality lies between a DSLR and a point-and-shoot camera and captures with great sharpness and offers realistic and vibrant colours with advanced camera setting options. The auto settings make it easier for the average user to produce fantastic photographs – so you don’t have to be a photo-pro to take pictures using your new Lumia 1020.
Regardless of camera skills, I love that TELUS offers Learning Centre sessions, giving their customers one-on-one access to device experts who can teach you all there is to know about your new device, whether that’s the Lumia 1020’s advanced camera, or one of its many features.
One of the awesome features in the camera is their Zooming Feature which makes it simple to zoom in and out at a particular area by a one-finger swipe.
Swipe up to zoom in and swipe down to zoom out, anywhere on the screen.
Another fantastic feature on the Lumia 1020’s camera is their Cropping Feature.
The cropping feature allows you to crop and save without losing quality of your photo.
Check out these photos I took below of examples of the amazing quality that is not compromised by zooming and cropping your photographs.
Wow, huh? One of my issues with my old smartphones was the lackluster photo quality especially when zooming. I was blown away by the Lumia 1020’s amazing camera features!
So we all know the camera is spectacular (the best I’ve encountered thus far on a smartphone) but I bet you’re wondering about everything else on the phone. Is it worth the buy?
As a smartphone, it offers the best of what Windows Phone currently has to offer in regards to smooth, fluidic user interface with no lag.
The phone offers customizable tiles (icons) for your apps, games, media, photos & more. It comes with Microsoft Office which includes Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote and Skydrive Storage for your pictures, documents and notes.
Watching media (for example Youtube) or playing games shows crisp, high-definition quality given the 4.5 inch AMOLED display with the resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels.
It’s a little heavier and bigger than your average flagship phone but it has a solid and premium feel because of the curves of the poly-carbonate body.
Even with the protruding camera lens on the back, I found with regular use, it became less of an issue when holding the phone. I would recommend purchasing the camera grip that is intended to take easier point and shoot’s with this phone and it also adds extra power of 1020 mAh built-in rechargeable battery which provides you with up to 285 extra shots or 48 minutes of video.
I do however wish there was better grip on the phone as I found it to be a little slippery and could be cause for phone drops. I would recommend a proper case that offers better grip for this phone.
This is by far the best camera phone on the market and is ideal for both the professional and amateur photographers alike.
If you’re still thinking of the perfect gift to place under the tree this year for that special someone on your list that enjoys taking pictures and in need of a new smartphone, definitely consider the new Lumia 1020.
